Telangana Agriculture University, IRRI Sign MoU for Research Projects on Rice Crops

PJTSAU and IRRI have signed an MoU for research purposes on the production of Rice Crops in Telangana. The collaboration between PJTSAU and IRRI will facilitate faculty and student exchange program as well.

Telangana Agriculture University, IRRI Sign MoU for Research Projects on Rice Crops

For the purpose of collaborative research projects on the production of rice crops in Telangana, Philippines' International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) signed an MoU with Telangana's Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agriculture University (PJTSAU). The MoU was signed by the director general of IRRI along with his team of scientists and the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Dr V Praveen Rao.

According to the press release, IRRI will be organising capacity building programmes such as the advanced breeding technologies and Mutual Student-Faculty exchange programme to PJTSAU’s faculty. The prospective MoU with IRRI was discussed with Telangana Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy.

As a part of the MoU, both the institutes will work on collaborative research projects that will focus on breeding new rice varieties that will be resistant to various issues like salinity, pests and diseases and drought control. Since the past few years, there has been a rise in the rice varieties that offer a low glycemic index which is more suitable for customers who are diabetic. Both the universities will be looking forward to developing this particular type of rice.

Both PJTSAU and IRRI will be preparing a plan of action that will allow them to produce diverse numbers of rice types. In their plan of action, the press release states that they will be keeping in mind the large-scale irrigation programmes of Telangana and the efficient use of water in the production of the rice crops with a focus on Kharif rice types.

IRRI has accepted to setting up of a regional centre in PJTSAU’s Campus so as to provide more importance to the research projects and programmes that will take place in Telangana, according to the press release.
