Suresh Gopi vows to secure AIIMS for Kerala, with Alappuzha as the first choice and Thrissur as backup. He promises not to seek votes again unless the project is approved.
Union Minister Assures to Fight for AIIMS in Alappuzha or ThrissurAIIMS in Alappuzha or Thrissur: The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Suresh Gopi has once again demanded the setting up of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kerala, saying the state was in dire need of a world-class medical-cum-research institution. "Alappuzha should be given priority as there are no major healthcare facilities in the town and it is backwards on all other developmental fronts," he said. He added the district had been neglected for years, and the institute would change the face of the region medically, education-wise, and economically.
However, Gopi also made it clear that if Alappuzha is rejected by the Centre for any reason, his second option will be Thrissur. As the MP of Thrissur, he promised the people he would not let them down in both districts, and the fact that Alappuzha is his paramount option. He has also criticised the Kerala state government for proposing just one location, instead of multiple options, which he believes in delay the approval process.

The minister made a bold political statement that he will not ask for votes again if the foundation stone for the AIIMS is not laid in Kerala . “It is not just a political promise. His comment fuelled intense debates in Kerala’s political circles, as such a public pronouncement also puts the state and the centre in a tight spot.
If AIIMS, once approved, would provide high-end healthcare, medical education, and research facilities, and employment to several thousand people. It would also ease the pressure on hospitals in adjoining States, where a large number of Keralites travel for specialised treatment. The demand for an AIIMS in Kerala has been pending for years, and Suresh Gopi’s latest demand has once again brought the issue into the spotlight.
Presently, the Union Government has not yet given a green signal to any AIIMS in Kerala, but talks are on. The final decision would be taken based on land, feasibility, and government coordination. With Suresh Gopi’s strong stand, the coming months are slated to see further political developments on the issue, all the more so since public support for AIIMS is steadily swelling in the state.
