The Central Government has taken the decision to give an extra chance to candidates who missed and exhausted their last attempt of UPSC Civil Services Prelims in 2020 owing to the novel Coronavirus pandemic. However, this decision will be applicable to candidates whose attempts have exhausted in 2020 and are not age-barred. The Supreme Court was hearing a plea on February 05, 2021, filed by Rachna Singh, a civil service aspirant. The petitioner sought an extra attempt for all those candidates who had their last & final attempt UPSC CSE exam on October 04, 2020.
The following relaxations have been given in this regard –
- One attempt of UPSC CSE 2021 will be given to candidates whose number of attempts have exhausted in 2020 and are not age-barred from appearing in CSE 2021.
- No relaxation will be given to candidates whose attempts have not exhausted in 2020 and are age-barred from appearing in CSE 2021.
- The relaxation to candidates who have exhausted their attempts in 2020 is a one-time decision exclusively applicable for 2021, and will not be continued in the upcoming years.
From the above rules, it is clear that it is a one-time opportunity only for those who have not crossed the upper age limit and have missed their last UPSC CSE exam attempt in 2020. For the General Category, the upper age limit to appear for UPSC CSE is 32 years, and the same for OBC is 35 years. For SC/ ST category, the upper age limit is 37 years.
