VC Punjab University Warns Against the Central University Status to PU

Prof Arun Kumar Grover, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University told Senators of the varsity during a meeting of the Senate on December 17, 2016 to not pass any resolution seeking Panjab University a Central University status.

The VC said that the Central University status will make them shed even the little authority that the varsity has now. The newly elected senate members in their first meeting expressed their concerns with regard to the poor financial condition of the University. The VC also informed the members about the meeting held with officials of MHRD and UGC on the issue. The VC said that Panjab University is seeking 12 percent increase in the central funding whereas several other universities have granted more than that.

One senator proposed that the Senate should pass a resolution for seeking Central University status to PU to solve its financial woes. Satya Pal Jain, senator and BJP leader said that Central Government has not stopped any grant of the University. He expressed his hope that in the next few days INR 44 crore would be released. He also clarified that due to no complaint of ABVP varsity’s funds were stopped.

The VC said that if Central University status is given to the University the whole university has to be structured. The Centre’s deficit towards the University will increase from INR 232 crore to INR 390 crore immediately. All the 172 colleges affiliated to Punjab University would be affiliated Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar or Punjabi University Patiala. The tuition fees, as well as examination fees, will increase drastically and salaries of new teachers will be decreased by 50 percent.

Senator, Prof Chaman Lal suggested that PU should request the Centre to offer it a heritage university and the Centre should provide cent percent funding.
