VCs of State Universities to Use Special Powers to Eliminate Rigid Employment Rules

Various graduates from reputed institutes (including IISc, IITs and IISERs) recognized by the UGC have complained that they are being denied jobs and research opportunities at the state-level universities despite good scores in UGC NET, CSIR and other such exams.

Keeping these complaints in mind the state higher education council has asked the vice-chancellors of the respective state universities to practice their special powers in order to deal with such declining practices.

Graduates who seek jobs at these state universities have reported that they get rejected due to absurd recognition norms laid down by these universities. These state universities are bound to accept the degrees of universities regognised by the UGC, however, they rarely follow this criteria.

Vice-chairman of the Higher Education Council, Rajan Gurukkal, said that many bright candidates are not able to get jobs at these universities despite their excellent record and this increases frustration amongst students as well as brain drain. He also added that domestic constraints help in retaining these candidates or they would have ‘fallen prey to brain drain’.

Gurukkal added that the state universities not only refuse to take these candidates but also discredit their admission/ recruitment to other research institutions in the state. He also blamed the Public Service Commission for ruling out these candidates due to differences in the nomenclature of the degrees of courses they have pursued.

The higher education council will come up with a comprehensive manual of academic programmes, degrees, fields and their nomenclature at different institutions across the country. This manual will help the employers to verify whether the graduate is eligible for the job or not. He added that vice-chancellors should exercise their specialpowers till the draft of the manual is prepared.
