WB OBC Reservation Issue affects B.Tech admissions: The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) 2025 results have been delayed due to a legal issue surrounding the state's OBC reservation policy. Over 1 lakh students awaiting B.Tech admissions are anxious about the delay, which stems from a Calcutta High Court ruling that reduced OBC reservations from 17% to 7%. The court found that some communities were included based on religion rather than backwardness.
The West Bengal state government is challenging a recent ruling and has conducted a new survey. This survey identified 140 communities that qualify for the OBC (Other Backward Classes) status based on their social and economic conditions. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the survey results are based on a proper assessment of backwardness and do not consider religion. She assured citizens that OBC certificates, which are necessary for college admissions and government jobs, will be issued to eligible individuals again.
The delay in issuing these certificates is worrying many students. They are especially concerned about missing important national-level counselling processes that affect their education. Both parents and students have urged the authorities to resolve this issue quickly, as the ongoing uncertainty is causing them a lot of stress.
As the situation develops, students are becoming more vocal about the need for transparency and a quick solution. With the academic futures of thousands at stake, the pressure is increasing on officials to resolve the issue. A timely solution could provide much-needed relief for anxious students, allowing them to focus on their studies and pursue their goals with renewed determination.
