West Bengal to Get a New Hindi University Soon

With the Hindi University Bill Passed in West Bengal Assembly, Mamata Banerjee Announces Hindi University to be set up in Howrah to become a centre for Excellence. She also promoted unity between linguistic communities.

The West Bengal Cheif Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has announced to set up a Hindi University in Howrah which is the neighbouring city of Kolkata. The decision is taken for the Hindi-Speaking people settled in Kolkata for a long time.

On Thursday, 5th September 2019, the Hindi University bill was passed in the State Assembly as proposed by Ms. Banerjee. Under this bill, the right of education in the Hindi Language has been secured in the state. Previously, the mode of Higher Education in the state was only English, Bengali, and Nepali.

After the bill passed the West Bengal government has announced to establish a Hindi University in Howrah. It will be a stat-aided university which will be called, Hindi University as of now. Besides setting up a center of excellence, the university will work for the development of Hindi Language on a national scale.

Mamata Banerjee on Thursday after passing the bill said that the state believes in harmony and unity between people of different communities. She informed that the final name of the Hindi University will be decided after having a discussion with people of all the communities. The foundation of the university has been laid after land acquisition. Ms. Banerjee has proposed the state higher education department, Bikash Bhawan to start the construction work as soon as possible.

Banerjee in state assembly said that the government has given equal importance to people in the state speaking other languages than Bengali. Hindi must not fall behind for which, setting up Hindi Schools, Colleges and Universities will be proven beneficial. This step has been taken after many requests came from the Hindi speaking people of West Bengal.

Except for the Hindi University, Ms Banerjee announced that the government will establish universities in all the districts of West Bengal. A new university is set to be inaugurated in Jhargram. She informed that the state government has plans to set up 31 Universities 50 colleges and more than 7,000 Schools along with a focus on Engineering and Medical colleges.

Political experts believe that this is a planned move to re-acquire the faith of Hindi-speaking people of the state after she announced 3 months ago that people living in Bengal have to learn Bengali. On June 24th, The chief minister of Bengal said that she speaks their language when she goes to states like UP and Bihar. In order to take Bengal forward, someone living in Bengal must learn Bengali. Her statement sparked a lot of controversy in national politics.
