International students from Canada graduating from Designated Learning Institutes (DLIs) extend their stay in the country to practice their profession and subsequently build a life through Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).
DLIs are defined by the government of Canada as a school that is approved by a territorial or provincial government to welcome international students.
While reviewing PGWP holders through yearly graduate cohorts, it was found that the total number has shown an upward trend. The study found that from the 2008 cohorts, 29% of the graduates held a PGWP after five years. The number increased by 5% for the 2009 cohort and has continued burgeoning with around 52% graduating cohort of 2013 receiving PGWP five years later.

The growth of PGWP has been exemplified by highlighting the statistics that testify to a 528% increase in the total number of PGWP holders between 2008 and 2018.
At present, 807,000 international students hold Canadian study permit. The Statistics Canada data mentions the reason for an increase in PGWP as it allows international graduates to make a living in Canada and also it is a useful tool to get permanent residency in Canada.
In 2008, the median average earnings for valid PGWP holders with positive T4 earnings were CAD 14,500. The figure saw a massive increase in the 2018 tax year with it rising to CAD 26,800.
The earning potential for PGWP holders has increased over time which has in turn led to an increase in PGWP holders.
PGWP permit holders can easily transition into permanent residency after completing their education. This is the chief way to work for Canadian employers for a maximum of three years.
However, the actual PGWP length depends on the duration of the post-secondary courses which the permit holder has studied.
This work permit has become popular with the success rate of students getting permanent residency in Canada. As per Statistics Canada data, within five years, almost one-fourth of all PGWP holders become PRs in Canada.

The numbers, however, may vary for PGWP holders who have different academic credentials such as bachelor's or master's degrees. It is now quite evident that PGWP has become the bridge to transition from an educational career to permanent residency.
