12 Lakh Untrained Teachers Appear for NIOS Diploma in Elementary Education Exam

According to the reports,12 lakh untrained teachersall over India are taking the examination for the two-year diploma course in elementary education. The exam is conducted byNational Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)which is an initiative of Prime Minister's Digital India campaign. It aims at providing professional training to the aspiring teachers.

There are around 3,186 exam centres across the country where the test will be administered. The number of enrolled candidates is more than 12 lakh for theDiploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) course.

The main aim of theD.El.Ed courseis to provide training to untrained teachers working in primary and upper primary schools in different states of the country. The department has an online portal for the complete admission procedure.

As per the records, among those who will be appearing the exam, 2,69,377untrained teachersare from Bihar and 1,62,457 from West Bengal followed by 1,16,930 untrained teachers in Assam, 66,000 Jharkhand and 52,084 from Odisha. In case, they fail to appear in the examination they will be given another chance to attempt to clear the D.El.Ed examination.

According to the Right to Education Act, it is mandatory for teachers togain professional training.There are around12 lakh untrained teachersall over the country who have to clear the D.El.Ed programme by 29th March 2019. In case, they fail to do so they might lose their jobs.
