21 Medical Students from Government Medical College, Kerala Suspended on Grounds of Ragging Freshers

A total number of 21 students from Government Medical College in Mallapuram district, Kerala have been suspended on grounds of ragging Ist year students. The senior students made the freshers to wash toilets and drink polluted water as part of ragging. A total number of 40 freshers complained to the authorities of the college and the administration stepped in and took immediate action.

As of now, the investigation is being conducted by the internal committee of the college, and it will submit the report to the anti-ragging committee on December 21, 2016.

Severe action will be taken on these 21 students if they are found guilty by the anti-ragging committee which consists of representatives from media ad police.

Last year, a total number of six students ragged fresher students inGovernment Polytechnic College, Kottayam. However, these students surrendered voluntarily at the police station. After the investigation conducted by the police, seven students were found guilty, and two students were absconding.

According to the guidelines given by Supreme Court, the fresher students must be given accommodation separately in the hostel, and a warden must be appointed for these students. Senior students and outsiders are not to be allowed into the hostels during nights to prevent any such acts of ragging.

In 2015, Rishiteshwari, a student from Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur committed suicide as she was unable to bear the ragging that was being done by senior students. in 2016 too, one first year engineering student tried to commit suicide due to ragging by senior students of the college.

The government has drafted various laws to prevent ragging, and most of them are not being implemented effectively.
