50% Rise in PM's Special Scholarships for Students in J&K
- As per the new Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), there has been a rise of 50% for students of J&K who pursue higher education outside the state.
Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme PMSSS, for candidates of Jammu and Kashmir who study higher education outside the state, has gone up by 50% as compared to 2016, as per Human Resource Development (HRD Ministry). More than 3,420 students studying out of J&K have been benefited from the scheme in 2017, from 1,220 to 2,200.
The rise in the scholarship percentage is because of the efforts made by the government to popularize & streamline the scholarship scheme. According to an HRD official, the new scheme has better transparency, since the tuition fee is directly transferred to the institutes/colleges so that when a student goes for admission, the college will not pressurize them to pay academic fees.

The scholarship scheme for J&K was launched in the year 2011. The main aim of the scholarship is to provide students with better opportunities and high-quality education available out of state. As most of the students face the shortage of funds and resources even after possessing great knowledge and potential.
Every grant involves financial support up to Rs. 10,000 for stationery, Rs. 90,000 for hostel expenses and for tuition fee anywhere between Rs. 30,000 up to Rs. 3 lakh. Also, 5,000 new scholarships are granted to general, medicine, and engineering students every year.

The All India Council for Technical Education AICTE, which is the administrative body for advanced education is assigned the task of implementing the new scholarship scheme to aspirants from such states.
