Admissions of 800 Dental Students Cancelled in Madhya Pradesh

A four-member committee at the order of the Jabalpur bench of Madhya Pradesh High recomended admission of around 800 dental college students in Madhya Pradesh illegal, recommended to cancel their admissions.

A four-member committee formed at the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, established that the admission of around 800 dental college students in Madhya Pradesh was illegal. The committee recommended the cancellation of these admissions.

The bench order to shortlist the names of the candidates who were admitted on the basis of their marks in class 12th board examination instead of the entrance examination.

The Dental Council of India’s (DCI) took the decision regarding the cancellation of the admission of these students on the ground that they did not take any entrance test. Later the students challenged the order of DCI and approached the Court.

Members of the four- member committee were -

  • TR Thapak, chairperson of admission and fee regulatory committee
  • Shashi Gandhi, joint director of medical education
  • Representatives of Jabalpur’s Medical University
  • Members of DCI

The committee sent its recommendations to the medical education director. Around 871 students were admitted to different dental colleges of the state in 2014. Out of theses students, only 15 students wrote Dental and Medical Admission Test (DMAT). The exam was conducted by Association of Private Dental and Medical Colleges (APDMC), Madhya Pradesh.

Shashi Gandhi, joint director of medical education informed that the admissions of 871 candidates were scrutinised after the court's order. Now the directorate will convey the decision to the deans of the respective colleges.

The students feel cheated by the medical education department and medical colleges and said that their career is jeopardised. Several students said that it is the Dental Council of India (DCI) and Director of Medical education who are the main culprit as they were involved in the admission process. It is not the students alone their families are also affected due to the order.
