India Home to 75 Advanced Medical Colleges, Need 500 More: Dr Harsh Vardhan

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ministry, announced that under the current financial year, a total of 75 advanced medical colleges-cum-hospitals in India. However, India is in need of 500 such medical colleges/hospitals that can offer medical health services.

Speaking on the progress of the medical industry, Union Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan announced that the 75 advanced medical colleges-cum-hospitals have been sanctioned in the current Financial Year, across various aspirational districts.

He further added that over 500 more advanced hospitals across India are required in order to provide prompt health services under the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat and other schemes.

On 22nd February 2020, the Union Minister had been called to inaugurate the brand new Institutional Campus along with laying the foundational stone for the Residential Complex at the National Institute of Public Health Training & Research (NIPHTR) Panvel. During the ceremony, Dr Harsh Vardhan claimed that the “negligence” in the post-independence era in developing the public health facilities, which is among the “fundamental right of every citizen”, resulted in such lack of proper health facilities.

While addressing the topic, over the past half a century, India saw the establishment of 82 advanced medical colleges across different districts. He added that the country, however, needs a lot more advanced medical colleges-cum hospitals. These colleges-cum hospitals will provide immediate health services to the people of the country and fulfil the promises made under various health schemes of the Central government, he mentioned.

The “Transformation of Aspirational Districts” programme aims effectively and swiftly develop the districts with their respective states as the main promoters.

The recently launched the Robot National Surveillance System is aimed at reducing the rate of mortality in India which are caused due to current fatal viruses such as Ebola and Coronavirus. In a statement to various medical professionals such as retired medical doctors, officers, gynaecologists, and others, the Union Minister requested them to offer their services in suggesting new ideas that can improve the public health system.

Concluding his speech, he spoke about the achievements of Indian health ministries, in reducing mortality rates caused due to epidemics such as polio, malaria and TB.
