AICTE: 3 Private Universities to Shut Down Engineering & Management Colleges in Punjab
- Few colleges in Punjab have opted for progressive closure as they have not been able to fill the number of seats in its technology departments.
- Candidates already enrolled will be able to complete their courses, however.
The demand for engineering courses has been declining gradually year after year. Lakhs of engineering seats remain unfilled in various states across the country due to a conflict that exists because of more number of engineering colleges as against the number of engineering course takers. In the latest development, AICTE has ordered three private universities to shut down their engineering and management colleges as they have failed to admit the required number of students. Students already enrolled can, however, complete their degree course. Further, they will not be able to admit any student for the academic session of 2017-18.

According to the list released by AICTE, six colleges that are managed by Mandi Gobindargh-based Regional Institute of Management and Technology or RIMT, Chitkara Group and Desh Bhagat Group of Institutions. The colleges managed by these groups have written to AICTE for progressive closure as they failed to admit the required number of students.
The following are the colleges that opted for the progressive closure: -
- RIMT Institute of Management and Technology
- RIMT Aggarsen College
- RIMT Management and Technology
- Chitkara Institute of Engineering
- Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and Computer Science
- Desh Bhagat Institute of Advanced Computer Science

Chairman of Desh Bhagat Group indicated that it would be difficult for the colleges to sustain financially without the adequate number of admissions. Therefore, its management has opted for the progressive closure.
Vice President of PUTIA or Punjab Unaided Technical Institutes Association revealed that there are a few other colleges, which opted for progressive closure.
