AICTE has decided to close down 800 engineering colleges in different regions of India due to lack of quality infrastructure, education and admissions. Chairman of AICTE, Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe, also informed that 150 engineering colleges are shut down every year.

Recently the council had also announced that colleges that have not been able to close at least 30% admissions for five consecutive years will be closed down. According to the official site of AICTE, 410 colleges have been approved for closure from 2014-15 to 2017-18.

The highest number of engineering colleges seeking progressive closure are in Karnataka followed by Maharashtra. Some of the colleges are also looking forward to turning into polytechnics or science and arts colleges in order to survive.

Due to lack of good learning and teaching facilities, employability standards at engineering colleges have gone down. Looking at the quality of teaching, training programmes have also been started by AICTE for professors at engineering institutions.

Sahasrabudhe said that these training programmes will enable the teachers to train aspiring engineers to help them find jobs. Another objective of AICTE is to make the engineering students industry-ready.

Compulsory internships programmes have also been introduced in the curriculum of engineering to provide students with real-time learning. This will also help in improving the number of pre-placement offers.
