Aligarh Muslim University Reserves Seats Only for Internal Students
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi demanded Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to introduce reserved quota in the university. AMU authorities have said that they have never followed the policy of reserving seats on the basis of caste or religion.
In response to the demands Uttar Pradesh CM, Yogi Adityanath to introduce quota in Aligarh Muslim University, the university authorities have clarified that it has never followed the policy of reserving seats on the basis of caste or religion. It only reserves 50% seats for internal students irrespective of their caste or religion.
The CM demanded reservation for Dalits while addressing a public meeting in Kannauj. He asked minority-run institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Aligarh Muslim University to reserve seats just like the Banaras Hindu University.

In response to the same, AMU officials clarified that as per the AMU Act 1981, which granted the minority status to the university, all minority institutions are exempted from implementing constitutional reservations as per Article 15 (5).
Meanwhile, the Aligarh Muslim University’s case regarding its minority status is sub judice in the Supreme Court. The petition filed by the previous government challenged the minority status of the varsity. However, the current government has withdrawn the petition filed in Allahabad High Court stating the Aligarh Muslim University is a minority institution.

Aligarh Muslim University is located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh and offers different degree and diploma courses to students at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels. The varsity offers courses in streams like Humanities & Social Sciences, Accounting & Commerce, Law, Business & Management Studies Science, Science and Technology, Engineering and Medicine & Health Sciences.
