The University of Allahabad (AU) is one of the most famous central universities in the country. It has been boasting of taking steps for enhancing the quality of education and the academic level of its eleven constituent colleges. However, the recent moves of the Allahabad University seem to be in contradiction of this acclamation.

Allahabad University has waived off its cut-off criteria so the colleges of (AU) will now be taking admission of students who have scored marks as low a 5 and 10 per cent in the entrance test of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University, Rattan Lal Hangloo, has removed the limit of cut off merit or qualifying marks that a student should have scored in the entrance test in order to get admission in the university. The authorities of AU had declared the criteria of cut off marks for admitting students. According to that eligibility criteria, a general candidate had to get 30 per cent marks (out of the total 300 marks) and an OBC candidate had to have 27 per cent marks for getting admission in the courses of their choice at Allahabad University. No cut off marks were set for candidates of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Scheduled Caste (SC) categories. The concept of negative marking was also removed by the university authorities.

Professor Manmohan Krishna, the Director Admission, said that following the criteria of cut off marks, around 16,000 students in B.Sc and 24,000 students in B.A. had qualified the entrance exam against the 2,500 seats for B.Sc and 13,500 seats in B.A. that are available in AU and its constituent colleges. The number of students who have qualified for the course of B.Com is also much more than the total number of seats of the course which is 2,000.

The Principal of ISDC said that the decision to incorporate the concept of cut off scores was taken in order to improve the quality of intake. The shortage of candidates made the authorities waive off the cut off criteria so that no seats remain vacant in the constituent colleges of AU in the courses of B.A., B.Sc, and B.Com.
