ASHE 2019: Female Enrollment Highest in M.Phil, Lowest in Ph.D

CII-Deloitte Report Higher Education known as ASHE 2019 releases interesting statistics on gender diversity in Indian Higher Study Degrees. It has remarked that M.Phil has the highest ratio of women enrolment.

The recently released CII-Deloitte Report on Higher Education has given some interesting facts on the statistics of higher education in India including sex ratio and gender diversity. The “Annual Status of Higher Education of States and UTs in India 2019” report also known as ASHE 2019 released by CII-Deloitte was released on Thursday, 15th November. It puts light on the fact that there are about 326.1 lakh students in the higher education sector in India. Also, there are 48% of females in these institutions where the percentage of male students are, 52%.

Most students make the highest enrolment in the Undergraduate studies which are at 81.14% and at the Postgraduate level, the number drastically falls to 9%. 7% of the students mark their presence in diploma courses.

The reports show that the most number of female enrolments come in the degree of M.Phill which is 63.98%. The second place for most female enrolment happens in the PG Courses which is 56.46%. The significantly high number of female enrollments are seen in the certificate level courses which stands at 55.63%.

A significant disparity in gender equality is seen in the Ph.D level studies, where there are registered 68,842 female students against 92,570 male students.

Except for the gender Diversity, student enrollment among the backward classes in India is lesser than the proportionate backward class share in the population as informed by the report. The OBC category has the highest share of enrollments (35%), followed by SC (14.4%), ST (5.2%), Muslims (5.0%), and other minorities (2.2%).

In the last 4 years, the total number of universities in India has gone up. Where there were 760 universities in 2014-15, now there are 903 in 2018-19. This has been possible with newly set up state public universities which has the highest share (38.9%).

If we look at the state-specific data, Rajasthan has the highest number of universities (79, 8.75%) which followed by Uttar Pradesh (76, 8.42%), Gujarat has 65 universities in the next spot which shared 7.20%, Karnataka has 60 with 6.64% share, and Tamil Nadu has 58 with 6.42% share.

In the number of General Universities, Rajasthan tops the list with 48 universities. Where there 44 and 38 universities respectively in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Uttar Pradesh also has the highest number of technical universities followed by Tamil Nadu which is respectively 10 & 9. Delhi, Maharashtra and Karnataka have 6 technical universities in the state acquiring the following spot.

The report also says that the education budget in India increased by 11% from 2018-19 to 2019-20 which is 85,010 Crore Rupees to 94,854 Crore Rupees. The Central Government of India has also increased the allocation from last year’s 129 Crores to Rs 400 crore to support selected Indian higher institutions and transform them into world-class institutions.
