Sarbananda Sonowal, the Chief Minister of Assam state on Saturday, 6th May 2017 explained the importance of quality education in leading a decent life. He emphasised that people gain knowledge through education and this knowledge gives them power which further determines the quality of life. Adding to this, he disclosed that the Assam government is now distributing free text books to the students studying up to high school.

He stated that government of Assam is committed to quality education and to achieve this, his government will be distributing free text books to the students studying up to the level of high school. He also addressed the role of the Centre in helping the state to strengthen the inroads of higher education.

Speaking at a two-day regional workshop on innovation and best practices in school education for the north-eastern region at a city hotel, the CM said that the state government’s decision to start ‘Gunotsav’ programme for inspecting and assessing the schools across the state was implemented to create quality and value-based education in Assam. Also, the government has waived off admission and other fees in colleges for the students belonging to below poverty line interested in pursuing higher education. Sonowal added that pursuing teaching is a noble profession and if teachers are dedicated and committed, they can make students turn good citizens of the country. Thus, they play a major role in the development of the nation.

Prakash Javadekar, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Mr. V K Pipersenia, the chief secretary of Assam and other representatives from all the seven sister states of northeastern India were present at the workshop.
