Bangalore University to award ‘Real Gold’ medals at Convocation

Facing protests by students for not awarding gold medals for the last 2 years, the Unversity of Bangalore decides to award 352 gold medals at its 54th Convocation.

At the 54th Annual Convocation of Bangalore University, it is going to be a shower of real gold breaking out from the tradition of plated gold gifted in Institutes and Universities. The University of Bangalore decides to award the successful students with the medal made of 1.3 gms of the precious metal. The authorities have informed that the medals will carry 20gms of Silver with 1.3gms of real gold embedded on them. The medals will be gifted to the toppers of the university.

For the last two years, the university has seen student protests for not giving away medals to the successful students. The protests gained momentum when the university gave cash prizes to its toppers and certified them as gold medalists. The Vice-Chancellor of the Bangalore University Venugopal KR has said that this year, the university has spent a total amount of around Rs.14 lakh to award 352 gold medals. Each of the gold medals has cost the university around Rs. 6,000. The university itself has borne all the expenses.

Thee 352 gold medals and 92 cash prizes will be awarded by the Hon’ble Vice-President of India Venkaiah Naidu who will be present at the 54th annual convocations at the Bangalore University.

A total of 65.039 students of Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate levels have made it to the convocations this year. Out of them, 33,036 are distinctions, 20,437 belonged from the pass class and 6,656 students got the second class recognition. Also, 166 Doctoral Ph.D. degrees were awarded. For many years, the University has not awarded honorary doctorates. Bangalore University decided to do that this year. Out of the 11 names suggested for honorary doctorates, 3 names were selected to award the prestigious honour in the 54th convocation of the University. The 3 names are, Dr. CN Manjunath who is the director at Jayadeva Institute of Cardio Vascular Sciences; Dr. Kamini Rao who is the medical director of Milann, and SVV Subramanya Gupta who is a noted social worker.

Some students from a weak financial background achieved a lot of success and topped through their hard work and perseverance. One of them was the daughter of a bus driver who got 1st rank in M.Sc chemistry and the other one was the daughter of an auto rickshaw driver who achieved the 1st rank in B.Sc.
