The Central Bureau of Investigation filed criminal cases against 21 educational institutes, which offer teacher training programmes. The CBI also filed cases against some of the officials of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) after finding discrepancies in documents.

CBI checked the records of 600 teacher-training institutes in Andhra and Telangana and 21 institutes among them do not have proper land records and required strength, infrastructure and other facilities. Therefore, CBI booked criminal cases against these institutes.

NCTE had given recognition to these colleges and failed to monitor the facilities in these colleges. So, moreover, the CBI booked criminal cases against few officials of NCTE.

As per the norms of NCTE, a college, which offers teacher-training courses, must have a mandate built-up area of 15,000 square meters as well as a land area of 2,500 square meters. The college must have a parking space. NCTE has granted recognition to 21 colleges to admit 50 students. The council failed to inspect the basic requirements of these colleges.

CBI claimed that some of the institutions produced fake addresses and do not have a building at all. In spite of various irregularities, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) had granted recognition to these colleges for the academic session 2016-17. The officials of NCTE have been booked on the grounds of criminal misconduct, forgery and cheating.

Most of these colleges are located in Chittoor, Kadapa, Nandiyala, Tadipatri and Kurnool of Andhra Pradesh. Some institutes of Telangana and Karnataka are also on the list.
