CBSE Likely to Introduce Practicals in all Subjects for Class 11th & 12th

The Central Board of Secondary Education, what we generally refer to as CBSE, is now planning to introduce practical assessments for all subjects in classes 11th and 12th both.

As of now, the practical component only exists for science subjects and a few of the humanities and commerce subjects. Subjects such as Hindi, English, History and Business Studies do not have any practical exams.

A CBSE official also revealed that the board had been contemplating the idea for a while now. He cited the example of inclusion on the practical component in the subject of English would ensure that the students are able to master spoken English in terms of speaking as well as understanding the language properly.

As the current practice, the practical component will be given a weightage of 30 percent of the total marks allotted to the subject.

The above-mentioned change is likely to be introduced from the academic year of 2018-19.

Talking about reactions, a majority of teachers have appreciated the idea of the inclusion of practical components for all the subjects, while others are not sure about the decision. Only concern being, what will be covered in the practical element for a particular subject. For instance, if spoken English is considered as a component for practical in the subject, the socio-economic background of the students shall also be kept in mind, revealed a Principal of a leading school in Delhi.

On the other hand, some teachers believed that the move will make the teaching-learning process more active and output oriented. Stressing on the inclusion of the component in the subjects such as English, Hindi etc, one of the Principals of a school in the city, said that it is important to understand a language than to just write it.
