The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive to the schools under its affiliation asking them not to entertain any requests to change subject combination once taken on the request of students or parents in class 10th and 12th. A standard operating procedure is set to be rolled out dor dealing with the requests of subject changes in 12th and 10 standards.

The CBSE expressed that the students will be counselled properly in 9th and 11th standard only for finalising their subjects. As it is only two year-gap between 10th and 12th, any requests for subject change sometimes create problems for the schools in terms of allocation and burdens the students as well. A senior CBSE official informed that many students want to change their subject after getting promoted to 10th and 12th class.

CBSE New Guidelines for Subject Change in Class 10th & 12

  • According to the new guidelines, the request of subject changes can only be accepted based on the written application before 15th July of the current academic year.
  • The board has also formed SOPs to streamline the process as soon as possible. The official added that any combination of the subjects made by the parents will not be accepted by CBSE anymore.
  • As most of the subjects have internal assessments, the schools will counsel the students according to the internal assessment results.
  • According to the SOPs, an official request is supposed to be submitted by a parent or student to the school with the supporting documents regarding the reason behind the move.
  • After the requests are submitted, the school will have the responsibility to check the valid grounds of the request by assessing the performance of the student in his/her previous subjects to give the request final approval.
  • The school will also check if the child will be able to cope up.
  • The schools are also requested to check if the new subject requested are available there in the particular school for academic conduction.
  • The school also has to see if it has the official affiliation from the board for conducting the subject or the responsible authority for the skill-based course, if requested.
