To popularise yoga amongst students, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to offer grades to students for practising yoga in schools from the next academic session of 2017. These activities are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Sports, NCC etc.

Students have an option to choose any one of them under Health and Physical Education category. The grading will be mentioned in the mark sheet of the students. But it will not impact the overall result.

The notification said that students should be given opportunities so that they can be trained professionally in their area of interest. Students should be encouraged to take Yoga, Indigenous sports, and NCC in school so that they are benefited multiple ways like:

  • Sportsmanship
  • Physical fitness
  • Discipline
  • Self-sacrifice
  • Healthcare
  • Patriotism

In the Board examinations, 20% weightage will be given to the school’s internal assessment and 80% weightage would be given to the written test. In 2016, CBSE's governing body had approved a proposal to bring back compulsory Board Exam of Class X. There are 18,000 schools affiliated to CBSE currently. All the Board affiliated schools have been told to conduct three periodic written tests in an academic year and the best one will be considered and offer 10 marks.
