Class 9th and 10th Students to Get Free Laptops
Free laptops will be distributed to students studying in classes 9th and 10th in government and government-aided schools in Tamil Nadu. The free laptop scheme was currently for students in higher secondary classes and colleges.
The Tamil Nadu state government is planning to distribute free laptops to students studying in classes 9th and 10th in government and government-aided schools. This free laptop scheme was currently in place for students in higher secondary classes and colleges.
Education Minister, Mr. KA Sengottaiyan made this proposal on Sunday in Erode and asked the education department to draft a proposal so that students of classes 9th and 10th would also benefit from this scheme. He informed the officials to forward this proposal to the centre to get approval. The free laptop scheme was introduced in 2011-12 by former TN Chief Minister, Dr, Jayalalitha for class 12th students.

Sengottaiyan also mentioned how the centre had assured it would look into this free laptop proposal for students of classes 9th and 10th. Also, class 11th students were included in this scheme and more than 38 lakh free laptops have been distributed in Tamil Nadu. The government is not looking at incurring a lot of additional expenditure.
An education department official stated that if a student gets a free laptop in class 10th then that student should not get another free laptop in class 11th or 12th. That way, the financial burden will be reduced.

To distribute free laptops to approx. 5.3 lakh students in Tamil Nadu, the government had allotted Rs.758 crore in 2017-18. Lenovo, the laptop manufacturing company got the tender for providing more than 15 lakh laptops last month to the students.
