The recent order of Allahabad High Court, on February 9, 2017, has come as a great relief for the 70 law aspirants, who appealed to the court to remove the age bar on Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2017. Now, students more than 20 years of age can appear for the national level law entrance examination. The decision of the court overrules the upper age limit of 20 years that Bar Council of India (BCI) had set.

Counsellor for the group of 70 CLAT petitioners, Advocate Sushmita Mukherjee said that they have won the case relating to the age group, where 70 petitioners students have been allowed to fill the application form for CLAT 2017, being conducted by Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) Patna.

As result, these 70 students will be eligible for admissions in National Law University depending on their performance in CLAT 2017. She said that Justice Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale of Allahabad High Court expressed surprise over an age bar for studying. BCI has no power to impose any such restrictions.

Dr. A Laxminath, CLAT 2017 Convenor, said they are yet to get any intimation from the court in this regard. After they receive Allahabad High Court’s order copy they will take necessary actions and will have to abide by the order of the court.

Now, BCI is likely to appeal in the Supreme Court against the order of Allahabad High Court, though a similar case is already being heard in the Supreme Court. The BCI had put an age bar of 20 years for admissions to five-year law programmes and 30 years for three-year law programmes.
