Decision to Rename Dyal Singh Evening College Put on Hold: Javadekar
- Javadekar confirmed that it was neither the proposal of government nor the government’s decision to rename Dyal Singh Evening College.
- The decision taken by the college management has been withheld with immediate effect, he mentioned.
Giving clarification over renaming Dyal Singh Evening College to Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar revealed that the government does not have any plans to rename the college currently. Therefore, the decision to rename the college had been put on hold. He further confirmed that it was neither the proposal of the government nor the government’s decision to rename Dyal Singh Evening College. Moreover, the government does not want to change the name of the college and the decision taken by the college management has been withheld with immediate effect, he mentioned.
Mr. Javadekar was responding to the question raised by Mr. Naresh Gurjal (SAD Member) in Rajya Sabha. Javadekar said that the government is not intended to create any controversies by changing the name of the college. He wondered how the college management had taken such a controversial decision.

Mr. Naresh Gurjal pointed that altering the name of a minority institution is nothing but a direct assault on the feelings of a particular community. Therefore, it should be condemned, he added.
Explaining further, Mr. Gurjal remembered the significant contributions made by Dyal Singh Majithia for the cause of education. He set up various schools and colleges across the country with a motive to make education more accessible.
Recently, the Governing Body of Dyal Singh Evening College took unanimous decision to change the name of the college into Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya.
