Shri. M Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Information and Broadcasting participated in the 49th Convocation of Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi. He conferred diplomas to the students. Addressing the students, he said that the process of transforming IIMC into a University is underway. IIMC would provide a platform for creating various innovative programmes. He appreciated the institute which is playing an important role to meet the growing demand of manpower in the industry and academia.

He stressed the students to stay away from sensationalism. The media students should always present the facts as they exist without any bias which would further enable them to become real communicators. He urged the students to preserve old age cultures and values and encouraged them to fight against the social evils, corruption, illiteracy and poverty which are prevalent in the society. While referring to the corrupt practice of paid news, he advised the students not to succumb to such unethical pressures. The journalists should maintain high standards just as real soldiers of the fourth estate.

Emphasising on the increasing role of digital and communication domain, he said that social media has changed the communication flow. He further added that digital media has brought immense challenges and opportunities as the information is being shared in real time which generates instant feedback and response. Today, communication has become interactive. Nowadays people are not taking things at face value anymore. They are questioning, analysing and responding to the issues about which they have been passive in the past and are therefore demanding transparency, redressal and accountability.

He mentioned that Indian languages had made a significant impact on internet and mobile based technologies. The changes have rightly received the attention of policy makers while thinking about ‘Skill India’ in the media industry. He further said that all the media professionals must keep in mind the importance of regional media while planning campaigns to reach out to a disparate set of audiences. He also mentioned that Digital India initiative had played a significant role in New Media to grow by leaps and bounds in areas such as VFX, animation, gaming and digital advertising.
