The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has declared a provisional merit list basis the NEET scores in order to clear the confusion regarding admissions to deemed medical universities.

Director of DMER, Pravin Shinghare, said that admissions to the remaining seats in medical and dental fields of deemed universities will be done according to the merit list released by DMER. Various deemed universities had allotted seats to students on the basis of a separate university-level merit list. The universities made this move after a high court hearing in September, leaving many students and parents in distress regarding the admission process.

The Maharashtra state government challenged the decision of the high court and contended that students will find it easier to adhere to a centralized admission process.

The Supreme Court gave its decision in favor of the state government on September 28, allowing the DMER to conduct admissions till October 7. On the other hand, the apex court had authorized the admission process and allowed the deemed universities to wrap up the admissions till September 16. The deemed universities comprise of more than 1,700 seats.

Shinghare also said that up to 400 seats in dental colleges and 430 in medical colleges need to be filled and the admissions to these seats will be done according to the merit list declared by DMER on Monday.

Private as well as government colleges had wrapped up the admission process on September 30. However, the DMER had appealed for an extension until October 7 from the Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court heard the DMER’s appeal on October 3, the decision was deferred to October 6.

The extension will give the private as well as government colleges time to fill up the 20 seats that still remain vacant, Shinghare added.
