The candidates who have been enrolled under the School of Open Learning at Delhi University (DU SOL) will now be appearing for their first semester examinations along with the second-semester examinations in May-June 2020, following the directive of the Delhi High Court.

The Delhi High Court had released an order on 21st November 2019, wherein the DU SOL released a notification notifying the students of the rescheduling of the exam dates. The first semester examinations had been scheduled to be conducted in November and December this year. According to the reports, DU SOL exams have been rescheduled from November 2019 to May 2020 after the Delhi High Court's direction.

A group of students from Open School had approached the Delhi HC and submitted a plea, requesting them to implement the semester system from the next academic year. DU SOL had established a committee to review the complaints and grievances of the students and to suggest the solutions for the same.

Previously, the School of Open Learning at DU had been conducting the examination annually, instead of in semester mode, till the last academic year. However, this year, it had been decided that the DU SOL will be following the semester model.

However, the implementation of the CBCS model had a few hiccups, which caused issues for the students. The counsel for the petitioners mentioned that the classes which had been scheduled on Saturday and Sundays were started as late as 22nd September 2019, and had been cancelled thrice since. Further, the course material that had been provided to the students was either “incomplete or illegible”.

A report had been submitted by the Vice-Chancellor after the court moved in the favour of the students. Among the solutions mentioned, included either postponing the examinations by a month or conducting the examinations along with the second-semester examinations.

Officials from the DU SOL mentioned that the students preferred the former option, nonetheless, the institute chose to follow the orders of the court. However, statements from the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) stated that the students preferred the latter alternative of conducting the examinations in May and June. A member of the KYS stated that the study material provided to the students was “so bad” that a month would not have sufficed the students for their preparation.
