Students applying at the University of Delhi under the sports and extra-curricular activities quota (ECA) will most possibly have fewer options for opting for extracurricular activities. A direction has been received by the Under Graduate Council asking for limiting the choice of extracurricular activities for students who are looking for admissions in sports quota.

5% sports and extracurricular activity (ECA) quota is reserved for DU students who are sports aspirants. Candidates applying in the quota previously could apply in as many sports categories they wished to, however, it required to have at least one state-level championship certificate in the sports the candidate is applying for. The students can apply in 40 sports and 12 extra-curricular activities under the 5% ECA quota.

The committee that made the decision with a few members said that it becomes difficult for the colleges to organise and conduct trials for students if they choose too many sports specialisations. To curb the practice, the council has come to this decision.

One official informed that the students often chose multiple co-curricular activities which are similar to each other. For example, students often chose ‘Dance’ and ‘Choreography’, ‘creative writing’ and ‘poetry’ & ‘Theatre’ and ‘Nukkadd Natak’ together which creates confusion. The streamlining of the courses is decided to limit the choices between similar courses in DU.

The standing committee of the Academic Council (AC) in Delhi University is yet to discuss the topic prescribed by the committee on Thursday. After this, the resolutions will be moved to the Academic Council (AC) for the final nod on this topic. One standing committee member of Delhi University has said that the equal treatment of ECA students will be ensured by the decision.

Rasal Singh, an AC member of DU has said that the committee is also discussing the cut-off relief for students belonging to rural areas to study at Delhi University. The final resolution is expected to be passed by 1st May when the 2019 admission process of DU will begin.
