Engineering Students Should Start Projects for Elderly People: V S Natarajan

Well known geriatrician, Dr. V S Natarajan, addressed the engineering students at the workshop organised by ofSri Sairam Engineering Collegeand urged them to take up projects that will make the lives of elderly people easier.

The institute hosted a two-day workshop on ‘Healthy Long Life for Senior Citizens’ that was organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Natarajan, the country's first professor of Geriatric Medicine, encouraged the students to take up innovative projects.

Natarajan also added that there is a lot of scope for projects directed to help the elderly such as the front door safety device, walking sticks, lights and alarms that prevent from falling as well as auto-off of cooking gas.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed on the occasion between the institute and Dr.V S Natarajan Geriatric Foundation established by Natarajan who is also considered the father of geriatric medicine in India.

The aim the MoU is to develop innovative and socially relevant projects in the field of health and longevity of elderly people. According to the press release of the institute, it will also cover other research in the similar genre.

The MoU was signed by the CEO of Sairam group of institutions Sai Prakash Leo Muthu and V S Natrajan. Sai Prakash Leo Muthu also addressed the gathering on the occasion and said that engineering students have a lot of potential for developing tools that can help the elderly people.

The press release added that Sai Prakash has also pledged the support of his institutions to help the foundation in achieving its goal of striving for the betterment of the elderly community.
