The Union Government is planning to introduce the provision which will mark the transformation of medical education. The latest approval for NMC Bill by Union Cabinet is going to pave way for Exit Exam for MBBS graduates. The NMC Bill will be tabled in the Parliament soon, and the new Bill seeks to make final-year MBBS exam as the Exit Test for practising medicine in India, as well asl, for PG medical admissions in India.

Public Reaction on Exit Exam for MBBS Graduates

Earlier the meeting and discussions took place on possibilities for making final-year MBBS exam as Licentiate Exam for doctors. However, a few members were of the opinion that the final-year MBBS exam just tests the students in four subjects.

In contrast, a few members expressed that the Exit Test would act as a screening test for international medical graduates, as well as, the common entrance test for postgraduate medical courses. Making final-year MBBS exam as Licentiate Exam will lead to complications, said the Union Health Minister.

Exit or Licentiate Exam for MBBS graduates to practice medicine in India was one among the guidelines in the proposed NMC Bill 2017. The Bill was introduced in Lok Sabha during the winter session 2017. A similar provision was also made for introducing a test to practice competency of candidates who want to practice Ayurveda in India.

The idea to implement the Licentiate Exam for MBBS graduates received wide criticism from the medical fraternity across the country. There were also demands not to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI) with National Medical Commission (NMC). It is in the hands of government to take a call on it.
