Extra Marks to be Awarded to Students of Fine Arts by Maharashtra Education Board

The students of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) schools of Maharashtra have welcomed the move of the Education Department of the Government to award extra marks for achievements in Fine Arts like sports category, but the students and parents of non-state Board schools have expressed their concerns and they feel that students of the State Board will get an edge over their SSC counterparts.

The state Government has announced that Board Students proficient in Classical and Folk Arts and Drawing will get 10 to 25 marks extra in Secondary School Certificate exam. As per the Government resolutions, students from State Board schools, who have excelled in music, dance and drama for at least five years and have passed a minimum of five exams from Government approved institutions will get 15 extra marks in their SSC scores and any student who pass three exams will be awarded 10 marks each.

Those students who win at a national or state level championships in Classical Arts will get 25 marks and students showing extraordinary performance in theatre will be awarded 10 points each.

Now parents of the non-state Board have said the decision is partial and only students of SSC will dominate the top colleges as they will have an advantage in the admission process. They have demanded State Board to give grades like CBSE does.

Several parents expressed their concerns over the veracity of certificates that students will submit for extra marks. It was only a few years back that the Board stopped giving sports quota marks to students as lots of students used to submit fake certificates. If the same pattern is followed, the career of genuine students of a non-state Board will be ruined.
