Gauhati University to Begin New Assessment System
Gauhati University will introduce a new assessment system, 'Choice-based Credit System' from the next academic session from June 2019. It is done to have a uniform grading system.
Gauhati University will be introducing a new assessment system to allow the undergraduate students to choose a diverse range of courses and also have the freedom to decide the place, time of learning and the pace.
The new assessment system, “Choice-based Credit System” will be implemented from the next academic session from June 2019.

UGC has suggested that it will be a good move if all institutes of higher learning in India shift to a choice-based credit system and along with it, have a uniform grading system. Assam University had followed the system in the last academic session.
The Assam College Principals’ Council said that this system will give flexibility to the students in choosing subjects. This is done to bring uniformity in the undergraduate courses across India and with this in mind, the UGC has framed a syllabus. A university can only change up to 30 percent of its syllabus for its UG courses. Inter-university migration for a student will be done under the new assessment system of Gauhati University.
As per the new assessment system, honors students will study two-skill development subjects and the general course (pass course) students will have to take four skill subjects. Gauhati University will begin several skill courses for its affiliated colleges.

Gauhati University also held a workshop last week with the college principals regarding the new assessment system. The VC of GU, Mridul Hazarika and the registrar of the university, Nanigopal Mahanta and over 100 principals attended the workshop.
