Government Medical College to be Set Up in Leh
Leh District of Jammu and Kashmir will get its first government medical college. The budget allocation for the same has been completed already.
An official spokesperson of Jammu and Kashmir Administration announced that the J&K administration will be setting up a Government Medical College in the hilly regions of Leh. This initiative will be helpful for enhancing the healthcare facilities and education in the backward region.
The Health and Medical Education Department (HMED) will set up the Medical College in Leh District under Phase-III, and 25.125 acres of land at Shey Sindhu Ghat village. The land has been identified for the purpose, said the spokesman.
A detailed project report and the technical report has been prepared by HMED for the construction of GMC Leh as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The GMC Leh is a part of the Union Ministry’s plan for setting up 75 government medical colleges across the country in district levels. The spokesperson of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that the reports are ready to be submitted within 2-3 days. He added that setting up a GMC will not only increase the healthcare facilities in the region but also contribute to the overall development of the Himalayan district of Leh.

The spokesperson said that the total amount of Rs. 325 crore would be sanctioned by the Centre for the establishment of the Medical College in Leh. From the total, Rs. 115 crore has been allocated for hostel and residence for medical students and Rs. 80 crore for the faculty. Rs. 70 crore will be spent on medical equipment and finally, Rs. 60 crore will be allocated for the up-gradation of a teaching hospital.
