Govt. Policy: People with Disabilities Now Eligible for NEET PG

The health ministry has given its approval to make changes to the regulations for the admission of persons with disabilities in postgraduate medical programmes. Recently, in a meeting headed by the director of medical education and research (DMER), Dr Pravin Shingare, it was declared that individuals with the 21 disabilities listed in the Disabilities Act, 2016 will be able to apply for the NEET PG exam from now on.

However, it was not clarified whether these candidates will be provided special equipment and facilities for study through the course. Shingre also added that soon individuals with these recognised disabilities will be able to appear for the undergraduate exam and pursue MBBS courses as well.

These candidates will apply through the 5% disability quota and no further concession will be given in through the course exams and sessions. a medical examination will be conducted by authorised doctors to verify the disability. The candidate will be able to appear for the entrance test only if he or she clears the medical test.

As per the official statement released by the health ministry, the government wants disabled individuals to benefit from reservation while applying for postgraduate medical courses. The government has increased the number of reserved seats for persons with disabilities, from 3% to 5% as per the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

JP Nadda, Union Health Minister stated that the ministry has taken a right decision which was pending for a long time keeping in mind prime minister vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas’. Which implies that the true development happens with all and for all. As per him, this is one of the greatest step taken by the government as they are equal contributors to the growth and overall development of the nation.

As per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, candidates with all 21 benchmark disabilities can register themselves for admission to postgraduate medical courses. The disabilities include dwarfism, autism, hearing impairment, cerebral palsy and thalassemia. As per the health sector of the country, people with disabilities contribute equally towards the progress of the nation. Due to which they not only deserve equal right but also equal jobs and career opportunities. So that they can be self-sufficient and build a secure future for themselves.
