Govt. to rope in IITs & IIMs for Rating and Certifying Institutes
- Centre is planning to involve IITs and IIMs in rating and certifying institutes.
- The decision is expected to ensure transparency and speed up the evaluation process.
- A meeting will be set up with eight old IITs and eight IIMs to discuss the plan.
The Government is planning to involve IITs and IIMs in the process of rating and certifying institutes. These prestigious institutes will be asked to participate in the evaluation and accreditation process of institutes.
The aim of involving IITs and IIMs in the accreditation process is to ensure transparency and speed up the evaluation process without compromising on the quality of assessment.
HRD minister Prakash Javadekar informed that the ministry is planning to set up a meeting with the eight old IITs and eight IIMs to discuss the plan. The proposal will be put forth and these reputed institutes will be asked to assist the accreditation agencies in expanding their base.
Currently, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) looks after the entire accreditation and evaluation process under the guidance and regulation of the UGC.
Niti Ayog – the think-tank of Government – also suggested the involvement of private players in the accreditation and rating process to maintain the standards of evaluation.

However, the HRD Ministry is planning to look for resources within the system instead of taking assistance from external agencies.
The HRD Minister talked about the idea and said that India has a vast pool of talented students and teachers who can be of assistance in the rating and evaluation process and at the same time they can use this process as a learning tool.

IITs have not shown any inclination regarding this idea and some of the older institutes have also shown reservations about participating as accreditation agencies.
