A research paper prepared by Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur states that Green Tea can prevent blurred vision (cataract). The research paper has been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry Journal, Molecular Biosystems.

Prof. Swagatad Dasgupta did the research along with his team which includes Sumit Narayan Chaudhury, a research scholar as the lead author. The team analysed that green tea contains an antioxidant compound which can prevent the harmful effects of Ultra-Violet (UV) radiation. The exposure of eyes to the ultraviolet radiation is one of the primary cause for the blurred vision in adults. ECGC, a chemical which is present in green tea known to discard free radicals effectively.

It has also been noted that green tea prevents UV-induced oxidation of the proteins of one of the eye lens. The research also mentions that ECGC can restore the damage to the proteins up to some extent. Green tea contains antioxidants namely polyphenol. It plays a significant role in less complication in tea processing and thus making way for preventing cataracts.

An age-related cataract occurs due to the protein misfolding disease that usually occurs due to condensation of eye lens which precipitates or aggregate in the eye lens. Hence, it leads to damaging the transparency of eye lens.
