Gujarat High Court Allows NEET English Medium Candidates to Join as Respondents

The High Court of Gujarat allowed a group of students who took the NEET examination in English medium to join as respondents in a petition that sought to hold re-examination with a uniform set of question papers in Gujarati and English medium. Justice S G Khan posted the matter for further hearing on June 6, 2017, as Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) sought time to file a reply.

Students who took NEET in English medium filed an application to join as respondents. The court allowed the students for the same. These students claimed that any decision to cancel NEET examination would impact their career. Therefore, they wanted to be the respondents.

Earlier, the students who took the examination in Gujarati medium approached the High Court seeking to cancel to the NEET examination or prepare a separate merit list for Gujarati medium students. The students claimed that CBSE must give a uniform set of question papers in all the languages since there is a common merit list. However, CBSE failed to do so, and the questions in Gujarati medium question paper were tougher than English-Hindi medium.

The NEET controversies have been increasing as the date of declaration of results is approaching. CBSE is expected to declare NEET-UG 2017 results on June 8, 2017. However, the High Court of Tamil Nadu imposed an interim stay on the declaration of NEET-UG 2017 results. With the latest developments, it is expected that NEET-UG 2017 results might be delayed. On the other hand, students are nervous about the current situation.
