Gujarat engineering colleges are facing a serious problem of surplus supply and very little demand. The state has over 30 colleges that have more than 400 engineering seats out of which less than 20 have been taken up by students.

There are a total of 141 engineering colleges across the state. Of these, 39 colleges have more than 75% of their seats vacant after the first round of admission that was concluded on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. The number of vacant seats is more in remote areas.

Member-Secretary, Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC), G P Vadodaria said that over 30,000 out of 70,000 engineering seats across Gujarat are expected to remain vacant in 2017. He also informed that as few as 41,877 applications were received for engineering programmes out of which only 39,000 were eligible.

18 colleges have filled up to 75% to 99% seats, whereas, 22 of the institutes in the state have filled 50% to 74% seats. There are 39 colleges that have completed admissions for less than 25% of their seats.
