Gujarat: Universities Violate UGC Directive, No VC Got Term Extended
Vice Chancellors have been serving three-year terms in all the universities, and the issue was raised by syndicate members of Gujarat University in a meeting that took place two months ago.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) had directed all the universities across the state to extend the term of Vice Chancellors for five years in the year 2015. It has been one year, and it seems like none of the university across the state have taken UGC’s directive seriously. A meeting was held between the VCs of universities and Education Minister of the state Bhupendrasinh Chudasama. In the meeting, various VCs sought to implement the UGC directive.

Later, a representation was sent to the state government to extend the term. However, to implement such UGC directives, the government needs consent from the state assembly.
Most of the Vice Chancellors are going to complete their term in one year, and it is time for the state government to take a step and implement the UGC directive. M.M. Patel, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University, will complete his term in February 2017. The VCs expressed their concern by mentioning that they had raised the issue with the government multiple times and the matter is still pending with the state government.

The VCs are hopeful that the matter will be dealt on a priority basis and decisions will be taken as soon as possible.
