HRD to Set Up New Board of Governors for IIMs
HRD ministry has confirmed that each of the Boards of IIMs has to be constituted afresh. The new Board of Governors will be appointed under the new IIM Act.
The HRD Ministry has decided to set up new Board of Governors for each Indian Institute of Management - IIM. The new Board of Governors will be appointed under the new IIM Act.
According to the communique issued by HRD Ministry, each of the Boards will be made afresh which will comprise of three ex-officio members, IIMs current director, Union government and existing representatives of the state government. These members will be responsible to elect Chairperson of IIM BoG.

In the first meeting of the Board, the regulations regarding the selection of two faculty members and four eminent persons will be set. On the basis of these regulations, a person will be selected for a full term. Also, HRD has set December 15, 2018, as the deadline for all the IIMs across the country to form the new Boards. This will provide all the IIMs with greater autonomy as selecting the right board members will help IIMs reach the next level.

However, the regulations regarding the selection of board members have been facing a lot of opposition. According to many officials the process of constituting a board in unfit for academic institutions like IIMs. It will lead to bad governance.
At present, there are 20 IIMs across the country offering various postgraduate programmes in management. They also offer many certificates and short-term courses for management professionals and executives.
