IIT Gandhinagar Becomes First Institute to Offer Ph.D. Admissions to B.Tech Graduates
- IIT Gandhinagar is the first premier institute in the country to offer Ph.D. admission to B.Tech graduates.

The dearth of good Ph.D. scholars in the field of engineering and technology is one of the most challenging issues before the premier technical institutes and other engineering universities across the country. Various institutes have been trying to resolve the issue with some innovative ideas, and IIT Gandhinagar is the first premier institutes to take a bold step by offering Ph.D. admissions to B.Tech graduates.
Director of IIT Gandhinagar, Dr. Sudhir Jain revealed that the premier institute lacks good Ph.D. scholars. Many B.Tech students do not opt for higher studies, as they get attracted to lucrative salary packages and jobs offered by the companies during campus placements. Only a few students join M.Tech courses, and many of them do not go for higher studies due to many reasons. As a result, the number of students joining the Ph.D. course at IIT Gandhinagar have been declining gradually. With an aim to overcome the dearth of good Ph.D. scholars, IIT Gandhinagar has come up with this unique initiative, he highlighted.

The Ph.D. admission will be offered to the bright student pursuing B.Tech course in National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other selected institutes. Students who featured in the list of top five rank holders in their respective departments or discipline by the end of third-year of B.Tech course are eligible to apply for the Ph.D. course at IIT Gandhinagar.
Dr. Sudhir Jain explained that IIT Gandhinagar is creating an excellent opportunity for aspiring young learners to gain entry into scientific research. The Ph.D. fellowship offered to the aspiring students will play a vital role in bringing a new era in the field of scientific research. The Ph.D. fellowship is a full-time residential programme, specifically designed to enable aspiring and budding engineers to gain early entry into the Ph.D. course, he added.

Students who are aspiring to join Ph.D. at IIT Gandhinagar after B.Tech need not worry about missing out on M.Tech syllabus. Premier institutes like IIT Gandhinagar have autonomy to decide what to offer in an M.Tech course. Therefore, IIT Gandhinagar will include some important topics in Ph.D. and train students accordingly. The premier institute will also provide a monthly stipend to the selected candidates.
IIT Gandhinagar Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria for B.Tech Students: -
- By the end of the third year or sixth semester of B.Tech course, students must have scored CGPA/ CPI of 6.0 or above to be eligible for the admission to the Ph.D. course at IIT Gandhinagar.
- In general, GATE score is not mandatory for the admission.
- Candidates with a valid GATE score will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 35,000, while non-GATE candidates will get Rs. 25,000 per month.
