IIT Kharagpur Alumni Son Gifts Rs. 2 Crore to Parents’ Alma Mater
- A US-based individual has donated Rs. 2 crores to the alma mater of his parents i.e. IIT Kharagpur
- The grant will be used in setting up three chairs in the domains of chemical engineering, geology and geophysics and mine/chemistry engineering.
Shion Deysarkar, an Indian-origin youth living in the US, has donated Rs 2 crore to his parents’ alma mater -Indian Institute of TechnologyKharagpur (IITKGP). This is one of the prestigious contributions done by an alumni progeny. The grant will be used atCentre of Excellenceto make chair professorships.

Both his parents Ruma Acharya and Ashoke Deysarkar are fromIIT KGP.The couple graduated fromchemical engineeringdepartment in the year 1973 and are now living in Houston. They are regarded as one of the most prominent alumni ofIIT KGPsettles in the US and have often collaborated with IIT Kharagpur Foundation. The foundation helps in growth and development at theKharagpur campus. The funds granted by him will be used in setting up three chairs in the domains of chemical engineering, geology and geophysics and mine/chemistry engineering.
During his interview, Shion said that he always wanted to do something forIIT KGP campusafter looking at his parents’ dedication and love towards the campus. Hence, he decided that the grant will mean a lot to his parents and the campus. He also said that people like him who have an Indian connect can help in flourishing Indian academic culture along with American sensibilities.
