IIT Madras Museum to Showcase Contributions of Students, Faculty & Alumni
Indian Institute of Technology Madras has come with an innovative museum that will be placed at Periyar Science and Technology Centre in July 2017.
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has come up with an innovative museum, that will introduce students to a different world altogether. They will be able to break a chemical compound, conduct a virtual aircraft launch and make an aircraft engine on an experimental basis. The institute will place the new museum at Periyar Science and Technology Centre in July 2017.
The new museum will be fashioned on the lines of other similar and famous museum across the world such as:
- MIT Museum, Masachussets Institute of Technology, Cambridge
- Boston Children's Museum in the US
- Maritime Experiential Museum in Singapore
The museum will enable students to tinker with the latest technology apart from housing interactive exhibitions, experimental projects and public programmes.

A professor of the department of applied mechanics of IIT-M said that students would be encouraged to participate in the model building. They will be offered tools to make things. Stress will be given to bring up something creative by putting things together, breaking them into pieces, and again rebuilding them. Initially, they thought to house the museum at the campus of IIT Madras. However, there was not adequate space inside the campus. Therefore, they decided to shift the museum to Periyar Centre, where every day around 2000 people come as visitors.
The museum will showcase contributions from the students, faculty and alumni of the institute. Some of the patented and best projects will be showcased at the museum. These will include pieces from IIT-M Research Park, Centre for Innovation and start-ups.

Another faculty member said that IITs had always been associated with doing things differently. The museum was one of the ways of exhibiting that trait. IIT-M will seek a fund of INR 6 crore for five years. The Tamil Nadu government is willing to pay half of the amount and the rest of the amount will be raised from the corporates and alumni. If needed, they will also approach to Union government at the Centre.
