IIT-Bombay's Contest Won by Chandigarh University Students

Anil Nandal and Navneet Navi, students of the Institute of Bio-Pharma Sciences, Chandigarh University won the first prize in the Kalpana-Drishtikon, 2016. The competition was organized by theIndian Institute of Technology, Bombayin collaboration with the Tata Centre for Technology and Design.

Kalpana-Drishtikon is a national-level competition that is conducted annually. The competition aims at stimulating the creativity of the students who participate from several institutes across the nation including IITs, NITs and other private as well as government universities.

The team from Chandigarh University that won was called Daredevils. They won a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 that were awarded to them by the Tata Centre.

The team developed a cost-effective solution that shows the use of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) that will help in converting waste into electricity with the innate microbial flora that is a native part of waste. This is done through the recycling process using mosquito repellent cartridges along with an intact graphite electrode.

The eco-friendly model developed by Nandal and Navi provided a practical solution to solve the energy crisis in India. The model was highly appreciated at the event and won the competition.
