IIT-Roorkee Lowers CPGA Required to Pass the B.Tech Course
IIT Roorkee has lowerd the CGPA from 5 to 4.
Indian Institute of Technolgy, Roorkee has lowered the required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from 5 to 4 to pass the B.Tech course. Usually, the Institute terminates the students with a low performance every year. This year, the Institute struck off 18 students from the rolls who secured lower grades. However, the Institute has withdrawn the termination after the protest by the students. Out of 18 students, 17 students belong to reserved category.

According to the statistics presented by Mr. Mahendra Nadh Pandey, out of 1000 students, at least one to two percent of students are unable to cope up with the academic pressure. He pointed out a total number of 1,782 students left the IITs between 2014-2016.

Some of the officials said that reducing the CGPA is a good idea. The IITs should not instil the fear of failure in the younger minds. They also pointed that previously, IIT Kharagpur also faced the same problem where 30-40 students fail every year. Even IIT Kanpur has lowered the grades from 5 to 4 in the year 2011.
