IITs & NITs to Audit Quality Standards of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs)

National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will audit the quality standards of infrastructure and technical training of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) that are located in various states. National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) will award recognition to ITIs based on the audit conducted by IITs and NITs. NCVT comes under the sphere of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

Industrial Training Institutes that fail to maintain proper standards in infrastructure and technical training will lose recognition. NCTV will have the power to withdraw its recognition. Various multinational and national companies, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and government-run organizations will recruit the students from NCTV-recognised Industrial Training Institutes.

Therefore, if Industrial Training Institutes fail to comply with norms, the career of students pursuing various courses in the institute will be affected. Currently, there are 13,000 Institutes Training Institutes in India. Out of them, 9,000 are privately-run institutions and 3,000 are government-run institutes.

Secretary of Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Mr. K.P. Krishnan revealed that the government withdrew the role of Quality Council of India (QCI) in auditing the Industrial Training Institutes. The main objective of the ministry is to strengthen the regulatory mechanism in the structure of ITIs and improve the employability of the trainees who are enrolled in these institutes. Therefore, the ministry decided to change the norms for recognition and accreditation.

Mr. Krishnan also explained that the state governments would get powers to grant accreditations to Industrial Training institutions. Earlier, the Directorate General of Training did the process the same as per the audit report of QCI.

Now, State Council for Vocation Training (SCVT) will be empowered to grant accreditation to Industrial training Institutes.
