Indian Engineering Students lack High- Order Thinking Skills: Study

As per a research conducted byStanford Universityand theWorld Bank, Indian students make substantial gains in critical thinking and mathematics in first two initial years of their education as compared to students in Russia and China. However, the study suggests that Indian students have lower higher order thinking skills as compared to Chinese and Russians.

The World Bank andStanford Universityconducted the study on 5,000 1st year and 3rd-yearB.Tech students. The students were selected from random public and private engineering institutes. However, Indian Institute of Technology was not a part of the assessment. A similar survey was also conducted in China and Russia.

The study reveals that a disadvantaged student in India tends to score more from the media gain of advantaged cohorts in Maths.The disadvantaged students belong to the socially backward classes, rural section of the society and poor families whereas the advantaged students are the one from urban areas, cities, and financially stable families.

The study also reveals some interesting facts. For instance, it reveals that Indian engineering students start college with similar interests and academic skill as both Russian and Chinese students. However, Indian college students make significant gains in their academic skills as compared to the other two. These inter-country comparisons are significant as most of the engineering graduates in the world belong to India, China, and Russia.
